Monday, day 3 of our trip to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon.

Desert View Drive

Well, we got started a little earlier today, even before sunrise. We decided to head east again, taking the Desert View Drive to Grandview Point. Below is a bracketed exposure from Grandview Point, just before the sun started to rise (photo info: 50mm, 1/14 sec, f/14, ISO 400). Image processed using HDR. After watching the sunrise at Grandview Point, we continued east to Desert View for a few more photos.

Back At Camp

After spending the morning on the Desert View Drive, we headed back to camp. It was time to fire up the grill for eggs and tortillas. Our squirrel friends where happy to see us return, one of them even said hi (photo info: 500mm, 1/2000 sec, f/8, ISO 800).

Hermits Rest

We had taken the shuttle to Hopi Point before, but not all the way to the Hermits Rest. To get to Hermits Rest you need to take the Hermits Rest Shuttle Route. You can’t drive to Hermits Rest with a private vehicle during most of the year. We drove to Grand Canyon Village and got a parking space near Hopi House. We could have taken the free shuttle from the Mather Campground, but we prefer to take our vehicle so we can keep some of our extra supplies and photo gear close to us. To get to the Village Route Transfer to board the Hermits Rest shuttle we walked from Hopi House along the Rim Trail. The trip to Hermits Rest is 7 miles, with several stops on the way. After hearing from the driver that a ranger was giving a talk on condors at Hopi Point, we decided to exit the shuttle at that stop. Below is a distance view of a condors nest from Hopi Point (photo info: 500mm, 1/250 sec, f/8, ISO 200). Got off the shuttle again at Pima Point for the last time on the way to Hermits Rest. It was at Pima Point that our battery gave out. Unfortunately the extra batteries were back in the car. Next I took the camera and threw it over the edge and deep into the canyon. Sorry, that last statement was just a day dream I had at the time. Took the paved Greenway Trail from Pima Point and walked the final 1.1 miles to Hermits Rest. As luck would have it, a condor few over our heads a few times during our walk, must have heard we were without a charged camera battery. Hermits Rest has a snack bar and an unique gift shop.

Condors And Squirrels At The Grand Canyon

After exiting the return shuttle from Hermits Rest we walked back to our car to replace the camera battery. While walking back again to the shuttle stop (we had decided to go back to Hermits Rest), we spotted a condor near the Lookout Studio. Waited around 2 hours before condor F3 (condor tag) left it’s perch. While waiting for the condor captured a few squirrel photos, below is our favorite (photo info: 500mm, 1/200 sec, f/8, ISO 400). Below that is a series of condor photos as it leaves it’s perch  (photo info: 500mm, 1/320 sec, f/8, ISO 800).

Desert View Sunset

Had wanted to capture some sunset photos of  the Desert View Watchtower, but by the time we got back to our vehicle, it was a little after 6:00pm. Desert View is 25 miles from the Village. No time to waste. Below is a one of the photos taken before the sun set, there were a few clouds blocking the sun at the time of the photo (photo info: 15mm, 0.6 sec, f/18, ISO 200).
