It’s Sunday Morning, and it’s time for another adventure. Today we are taking the back road from Esteli to El Sauce. The town of El Sauce is located south of Esteli.

The Road To El Sauce Nicaragua

El Sauce is located in the foothills of the Segovia Mountains. El Sauce is famous for the Black Christ. On the 3rd Sunday of January, pilgrims from all over Nicaragua, Guatemala and beyond make their way to pay their respects to El Senor de Esquipulas (The Black Christ). The back road from Esteli starts out as a paved road north of town, but turns to a rough dirt road before too long.  Below is a watering hole for cattle we spotted while driving on the road to El Sauce (photo info: 30mm, 1/60 sec, f/13, ISO 100). If you look close you can see the cattle.

This is a view of the Momotombo Volcano before we arrived in El Sauce (photo info: 130mm, 1/80 sec, f/11, ISO 100). The volcano is located near the present day Leon. The volcano erupted in 1610 and destroyed the original city of Leon. The ruins are preserved at Leon Viego (Old Leon).
