Luke Days 2014 – Lightning In The Desert

Luke Days 2014, Lightning In The Desert  is a open house and air show that is open to the public and admission is also free. The event is held at Luke Air Force Base in Glendale. The show normally occurs every other year, but was cancelled last year due to federal budget cuts.

Friday – Practice Day

Friday afternoon we started to hear jets from our house in Litchfield Park. After capturing a few photos from our house, we decided to drive over near Luke Air Force Base. Luke Air Force Base is just north of Litchfield Park. We have a place we like to go to see the jets from Luke AFB, it’s on Alsup Road,  just north of Camelback Road. There is farming on both sides of the road, and normally farm workers are your only company. Not today, there was probably over 20 cars watching the practice session.

To the right is from Friday’s practice, was captured just south of Luke Air Force Base  (photo info: 500mm, 1/800 sec, f/8, ISO 100).

Saturday – First Day Of The Show

The gates opened at 9:00 am and the air show started at 11:00 am. We arrived at the parking area a little before 9:00 am, everything seemed to be very well organized, better than airport security :-). Below is a the new F-35A Lightning II (photo info: 500mm, 1/800 sec, f/8, ISO 200). I felt black & white was the best way to go. This F-35A wasn’t on display, had to use the 500mm lense to capture it.

Sunday – Last Day Of The Show

Since we missed the Thunderbirds performance on Saturday (we left after the big wind storm on Saturday) we went back to our spot south of the runway on Sunday afternoon. Below is one of the photos from Sunday (photo info: 500mm, 1/3200 sec, f/8, ISO 200).
