Free community event will showcase W.V. culture; offer chance to meet seven local artists

The new library in Goodyear will kick off its first art show from 5 to 7 p.m. today with live music, hors d’oeuvres and the opportunity to meet with artists.

Art of Cultures” is the first fine art show to be displayed at the Goodyear Branch of the Maricopa Library District at 14455 W. Van Buren St., Suite C-101.

In total, 17 pieces of artwork will be on display until Sept. 30, although today is the only time the community will be able to meet the seven artists who painted the work on display.

The artists are: Karen Cunningham, Dave Finley, Lee Hendrickson, Chris Kitzmiller, Anthony Pignone and Archie Tucker of Goodyear, and Corinne McAuley of Surprise.

Music will be performed by a string quartet from the West Valley Youth Orchestra. The event is free and open to the public.

This is our inaugural show at the library and we’re looking forward to just having this as a venue and as another way for us to have art up for our residents,” said Guylene Ozlanski, the arts and culture coordinator for the city.

The plan is to have three or four art shows per year at the library, Ozlanski said.

Artists were asked to keep the arts and cultures theme in mind by submitting work portraying West Valley culture,

Some artists interpreted as showing works that demonstrated their culture, where they came from. Some interpreted as identifying things that are important to the West Valley, iconic imagery, things that you would see in our area,” Ozlanski said.

Archie Tucker, who has been creating fine art photography pieces for the last three years, will have three pieces of his work on display. They are titled: “Amber Waves,” “Stairs to No Where” and “Burst of Cotton.”

I tried to do three different ones that were different, but also from this part of the Valley,” Tucker said.

Tucker said he only began displaying his work recently. His first art show was at the Catitude Gallery and Studio in Avondale. One of his photographs was selected to be featured in a National Geographic blog post.

He has also been featured at the Herberger Theater and Surprise City Hall, among others.

It’s great to get my art where the public can see it,” he said.
